Anticoagulants Increase Your Risk of Stroke

Instead of preventing a stroke, blood thinners can actually cause a stroke! Add to this the multiple medications treating more than one health problem can be deadly. A recent (2018) research study was performed at the University College in London outlining the safety issue of anticoagulant drugs.

The aim of this study involving 7,000 patients was to determine whether or not anticoagulant medications did in fact prevent a stroke or caused more harm, especially in the presence of other medically problems such as irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or kidney disease.

Of the participants, half were on blood thinners while the remaining half was not. The study duration spanned approximately 17 months.

Results and Researchers Comments:

Patients on blood thinners were 2.6 times as likely to experience a stroke as those who were not on anticoagulants.

Patients taking anticoagulants were 2.4 times more likely to have a hemorrhage or other problems included bleeding in the brain.

The risk of stroke for some patients was more than doubled, putting them at risk for severe, life threatening medical episodes and medical emergencies.

Researchers Comments

“We found that in this particular group, their medication seems to do the opposite of its intended effect,” commented study author Shankar Kumar.

“As we found a paradoxical reduced mortality rate alongside increased rates of stroke and major bleeding, this is clearly a very complex area,” Kumar teams further observations, “we strongly call for randomized controlled studies to test the clinical value and safety of anticoagulant drug therapy for people with both atrial fibrillation and chronic kidney disease.”
