Medicine of the past is becoming the trend of the future. Scientists and doctors are discovering the tremendous healing properties of natural substances. Most of us are exposed daily to an onslaught of pathogens and micro-organisms that have the potential to cause illness. And yet, we don’t get sick if our immune system is strong enough to ward off the bugs. The following information will well equip you for strengthening the family unit as a whole by giving the immune system a huge boost. In cases when the immune is operating less than optimally, items listed below will provide enormous enhancement and preventive measures. With the right lineup of natural virus fighters, you may well experience a season minus a cold or flu.
Each part of the immune system depends upon proper nutrition in order to be able to function at peak efficiency. Unfortunately, most peoples diets fail to provide nutritional levels that would equip our immune systems to operate at optimum efficiency. A great deal can be done using diet, nutritional supplements and herbs to increase immune response.
First 24 hours
At the first sign of illness change your diet to allow your body to focus on healing. Eat lightly; consume filtered water, broths, herbal teas and soups with lots of garlic. Avoid mucus forming foods such as dairy, wheat products, sugar and orange juice. Try grains like rice, millet, soy or cornmeal. Substitute dairy with the many delicious liquids made from soy, rice, oats, almonds, cashews, and coconut.
Suppression of a fever inhibits a major defense mechanism and prolongs the infection. In general, a fever should not be suppressed unless dangerously high (equal to or greater than 104F), or if prolonged.
Immune System Defenders
Mushrooms are looked upon as today’s medicinal powerhouses. Supported by scientific research, mushrooms may well provide the edge in strengthening any weak or aging immune system. The following are just a few of the scores of mushrooms teeming with immune boosting compounds.
Maitake appears to be the King of the Mushrooms but there are others on the rise. Research substantiates what has historically been known that using the whole maitake mushroom has the ability to fight colds, flu, tomors, regulate blood pressure, glucose, insulin and both serum liver lipids and may even be useful for weight loss. The active component is Beta-Glucan which is used primarily by the body to enhance the immune system and lower blood cholesterol levels.
Tonics of Reishi mushrooms are consumed often in China to treat influenza, the common cold and arthritis. These mushrooms are particularly beneficial for pain and arthritis through anti-inflammatory agents called triturpinoids, which are similar to steroids.
Shiitake mushrooms contain lentinan, a polysaccharide that has been shown to possess significant immune enhancing properties. It also stimulates the production of infection fighting agents that form our first line of defense against viral infections and other illnesses.
The root of the Lomatium dissectum plant is being utilized in the treatment of today’s most difficult viral diseases. Traditionally Lomatium was primarily used for upper respiratory infections among other extensive uses. Presently, Lomatium may be part of a protocol in the treatment of Hepatitis-C, Influenza, HIV, Aids, Chronic fatigue, Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Herpes simplex, Sinusitis and common Colds. With colds and flu improvement is often noticed within 24 hours.
Echinacea is perhaps the most popular of all the herbal medicines and one of the most trusted. When taken at the first sign of a cold, flu or other respiratory infection, echinacea is a champion among remedies. Extracts from this plant causes our body’s own immune system to be more efficient in attacking viruses and reduce cold symptoms. The key is to take enough.
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) taken in supplement form can help prevent as well as treat a cold or flu. Studies show that NAC increases levels of the powerful antioxidant glutathione, which in turn improves immune function. It also helps thin mucus accompanying a cold, flu or sinus infection.
Elderberry, supported by research, will speed recovery time due to a cold or flu. The extract from elderberry enhances white cell activity and prevents the flu virus from attaching to cells, which stops it from replicating.
Vitamin C increases interferon levels and acts as a natural antihistamine that helps dry up watery eyes and reduce nasal and chest congestion.
Garlic’s antibacterial and antiviral properties are as powerful as its pungent odor. This herb displays numerous health benefits ranging from the common cold to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Homeopathy Treatment and Prevention
The homeopathic Influenzinum is made from active flu strains that stimulate the body’s own defense system to resist infection. As a preventive measure, a ten year survey was conducted by the French Society of Homeopathy involving 453 patients. The results were remarkable. In approximately 90 percent of the cases, no instances of the flu occurred when Influenzinum was used preventively.
Oscillococcinum is another great homeopathic remedy used to fight the flu and has been subjected to clinical trials. Results of one such study were published in a peer-reviewed British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. A group of non-homeopathic physicians enlisted 487 patients of whom had flu symptoms for 24 hours. More patients recovered completely in the first 48 hours than the control group. Other studies replicated the same criteria. (Cooper 2003). In conclusion, results of these studies show that homeopathy carries the potential to make a dramatic difference in any flu epidemic without the risk of drug side effects.
To promote wellness and raise the immune system adopt a traditional diet that includes the consumption of live, whole foods, particularly those containing probiotics, enzymes and foods of their fermentation. Additionally, Omega 3 fatty acids.
