Is Aloe Vera Good for IBD – Ulcerative Colitis

All Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease (IBD) sufferers have a long list of concerns and complaints. Plants found in their whole unadulterated state have proven to be the most helpful to patients with inflammatory bowel diseases such as these. For now we will be highlighting aloe vera in its application to gut dysbiosis. Aloe vera has earned its reputation as a great healing agent, having been used internally and externally for centuries.

Conditions of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are commonly associated with symptoms of pain, inflammation, gas, bloating, bleeding, diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, abscesses and fistulas. It has been my experience most people are initially looking to alleviate symptoms of discomfort which prompts the question “what will heal me and take away my discomfort?”

What is Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera is a succulent plant with thick fleshly green leaves. As far back as the first century AD, aloe vera was used medicinally and it continues to be today. As a species, many feel it originated in northern Africa. Its extracts are used internally and externally with a wide range of benefits. This versatile plant possesses long chain polysaccharides that repair the tiny holes within the gut. Through the healing process, aloe vera reduces inflammation, pain and bleeding – all of which are primary symptoms causing distress and discomfort.

One of the physical attributes of Crohn’s/ulcerative colitis disease in addition to other gut complaints is leaky gut syndrome and permeable tissue lining. As a result of these holes in the gut, unwanted particles pass through into the blood. Substances such as gluten protein “once in the blood,” signals the immune system to attack and destroy. If this occurrence is repeated continually, the offending protein becomes a trigger, being recognized by the immune system as a foreign and harmful element. This is an example of a process that can precipitate an allergic reaction even though a person was not originally inherently predisposed. The gut lining must be healed over to prevent leakage of foreign material that could otherwise initiate this immune response.

Even when the intestinal tract has had sufficient time to heal, other influences can still trigger an immune response. The brain makes a blue-print of any offending substances that venture into areas they do not belong. For this reason sufficient time allowance of diet adherence is paramount to a full recovery – before testing any offending foods like gluten.

This is initially a two step process:

First, the substances which trigger the immune response must be removed until such time the body has healed and no longer recognizes the substance as harmful.

Secondly, during this elimination process, the gut can commence in the reversal process of promoting tissue integrity once again. This is accomplished by additionally supporting the immune system and the body with healing and health promoting substances like Aloe vera.

Fortunately the cells in our intestinal tract replicate very quickly being replaced approximately every 4 days. Aloe contains nutrients such as the amino acid L-glutamine which is in great demand by these cells, thereby enhancing restoration of intestinal tissue.

What Nutrients Does Aloe Vera Contain?

Aloe vera contains a vast array of nutrients, numbering 200 or more. Within this remarkable plant are vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and enzymes. These nutrients form the base for good health and are easily assimilated by the body.

Nature has the remedy to aid our needs, waiting to be called upon so that it may have the opportunity to work synergistically with our bodies.

  1. Where do I purchase Aloe Vera juice for my Ulcerative Colitis? Currently, I’m taking Budesonide EC 9 mg. every morning and Mesalamine 1.2g by mouth every morning and Mesalamine enema twice a day. My chief complaint is lower abdominal cramping. Recent coloscopy and CBC was normal. I read your book but don’t know where to start. Feeling overwhelmed. This is an urgent matter. Thanks for your feedback.

    • Hi Jeff,
Aloe vera juice can be purchased in health supplement stores and the health sections of large grocery stores. I condensed my book (quick start program) for patients such as yourself. The boy’s case history would be a good protocol for you to follow. Much of what he did would apply to you.

      Best
